Anubias glabra (lanceolata)
Anubias glabra (lanceolata)
Anubias glabra lanceolata is the lance-leaved form of Anubias glabra, featuring distinctly elongated, pointed leaves with a lanceolate profile that creates bold, architectural lines in the aquascape. Growing to 4 to 6 inches, the smooth, narrower leaves distinguish it clearly from broader-leaved Anubias barteri varieties. The care chart notes it is ideal for stones and driftwood — the clean lance shape looking particularly natural on angular stone or layered rock.
Planting tip: Never bury the rhizome in substrate — Anubias glabra (lanceolata) should always be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape with the rhizome fully exposed. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
The care requirements for Anubias glabra lanceolata are the same as all Anubias species — low to medium lighting, no CO₂ requirement, stable water temperatures between 72 and 82°F, and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy leaf production and the maintenance of the deep green color and glossy surface that characterize well-grown specimens. The slow growth rate typical of the genus keeps the plant manageable.
As with all Anubias, the rhizome must be kept exposed above the substrate and attached to hardscape. The long, pointed leaves are displayed to best effect when the plant is positioned on vertical or angled hardscape where the lanceolate leaf form can be fully appreciated.
In the aquascape, Anubias glabra lanceolata creates linear contrast in compositions dominated by round or oval leaves. It works particularly well in designs that feature angular or pointed hardscape elements, where the leaf profile echoes the geometry of the rocks or wood. In biotope tanks representing African river environments, the lanceolata form adds botanical accuracy alongside appropriate fish species. An elegant species plant.
