Description
Lecanopteris Deparioides
Lecanopteris Deparioides belongs to Lecanopteris, a genus of roughly 13 epiphytic "ant fern" species found from Southeast Asia through New Guinea and northeastern Australia. Every species in the genus grows a swollen, hollow rhizome that shelters ant colonies in the wild — one of over 100 plant genera known as myrmecophytes for this kind of ant-associated adaptation. This species carries a distinctive blueish-green, bulbous, creeping rhizome and fronds reaching 12–24 inches or more.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: No ants required in cultivation — a diluted fertilizer replicates the nutrient boost the rhizome would normally get from its ant tenants in the wild.
Give it good light, consistent moisture (avoid letting the rhizome dry out), and mount it on cork, tree fern fiber, or a chunky, airy substrate. Small divisions establish readily and can branch into multiple growth points, eventually creeping across the surface of their mount — a genuinely rewarding, adaptable species by ant-fern standards.
A relatively easy-going member of a genus better known for being fussy — a good entry point into ant ferns for collectors curious about this unusual, biologically fascinating group.
