South American Leaf Fish
South American Leaf Fish
South American Leaf Fish (Monocirrhus polyacanthus) is one of nature's most extraordinary camouflage specialists — a fish that looks, moves, and behaves exactly like a dead leaf drifting in blackwater. The body is leaf-shaped with a pointed 'stem' extending from the lower jaw. The mottled brown coloration, irregular fin edges, and habit of drifting slowly in the current with head tilted downward complete the illusion. It is a sit-and-wait predator that engulfs small fish whole in a fraction of a second.
Feeding & Care Tip: The South American Leaf Fish is a specialized predator that primarily accepts live small fish as prey — it detects and strikes at moving prey, and may refuse frozen foods initially. Small feeder fish, live guppies, or small tetras can be used to establish feeding; some individuals learn to accept frozen foods over time. Feed 2–3 times per week — this is an ambush predator with a slow metabolism.
Native to the blackwater streams and flooded forests of the Amazon basin — Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. Inhabits slow-moving to still, heavily tannin-stained blackwater with dense leaf litter and low light. The leaf camouflage is so effective that the fish can drift within inches of prey fish before striking.
Keep singly or as a pair in a species-specific blackwater setup. Any fish small enough to fit in its very large, expandable mouth will be eaten. The Leaf Fish can engulf prey nearly its own body size. A blackwater setup with Indian almond leaves, tannin-stained water, dim lighting, and no water movement creates ideal conditions.
One of the most extraordinary fish available in the freshwater hobby — the leaf camouflage is so perfect that even experienced aquarists have difficulty spotting the fish against leaf litter. A specialist fish for dedicated blackwater aquarists.
