Description
Cryptocoryne undulata 'Broad Leaf'
Cryptocoryne undulata 'Broad Leaf' is a wide-leaved form of the classic Sri Lankan Cryptocoryne undulata, producing notably broader, more substantial wavy-margined leaves than the standard species — creating a fuller, more visually impactful midground presence with the same reliable, easy-care Cryptocoryne character. The wavy leaf margins and warm olive-bronze coloration give this broad-leaved form a naturally rich, organic quality.
Planting tip: Cryptocoryne undulata 'Broad Leaf' grows best attached to or resting on hardscape with its rhizome exposed — never bury the rhizome. Shade-tolerant and low-maintenance once established. Stable water parameters and good circulation produce the best results.
Like all Cryptocoryne, Broad Leaf undulata may experience some leaf melt when first introduced to a new aquarium — a normal acclimation response that resolves once the plant establishes itself. It benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate and stable water conditions. Once established, it is a long-lived, reliable midground plant that holds its position without aggressive spreading.
This easy plant requires no CO₂ supplementation and grows well under low lighting. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. Regular fertilization through root tabs or liquid dosing supports the production of the broad, wavy-margined leaves that make this form particularly appealing. The broad leaf form is most fully expressed in established, nutritionally supported plants.
In the aquascape, Cryptocoryne undulata 'Broad Leaf' provides a fuller, bolder midground presence than standard undulata — the wider leaves create more visual mass and organic complexity in the midground zone. It suits low-tech and community tank setups where a reliable, naturally beautiful midground plant is needed without demanding conditions. The wavy broad leaves pair naturally with Java Fern, mosses, and fine-leaved background plants.
Cryptocoryne undulata 'Broad Leaf' is a bold-leaved, reliable, and easy-going Crypt for aquarists who want a fuller midground presence from the classic undulata species. Its broad wavy leaves and easy Sri Lankan temperament make it a naturally beautiful and practically dependable midground plant.
