Bucephalandra Purple Wave
Bucephalandra Purple Wave
Bucephalandra Purple Wave is a distinctive foreground variety whose wavy, longish-oval leaves develop a striking purple iridescence that makes it one of the most eye-catching plants for center hardscape focal points and detailed foreground compositions. The undulating, wave-like leaf margins give the plant a sense of organic movement, while the purple shimmer adds warm, rich color that is rare among rooted freshwater aquarium plants.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Purple Wave can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
As a Bornean species from Indonesia, Purple Wave can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to hardscape at any height in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. It grows well in low to moderate lighting with optional CO₂ supplementation, and prefers temperatures between 72 and 82°F with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.2. Like all Bucephalandra, Purple Wave can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Purple Wave grows to 1 to 3 inches in height. Consistent liquid fertilization with micronutrient-rich formulas helps maintain the vibrant purple iridescence. Stable water parameters and gentle water movement support healthy growth and the best color expression in this variety.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Purple Wave is particularly effective as a central hardscape focal point — a single specimen or small grouping on a prominent piece of stone or driftwood immediately draws the eye with its wavy leaves and purple shimmer. The warm purple tones pair beautifully with cool blue-green plants and pale stone, and create striking complementary contrast alongside yellow-green plants.
Bucephalandra Purple Wave is a wave of color and movement in the foreground of any planted aquarium. Its purple iridescence, organic leaf form, and focal-point presence make it a plant that consistently elevates the quality of any aquascape.
