Description
Rhaphidophora Megasperma Engl.
Rhaphidophora Megasperma was described by Engler and is native to Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, typically found in lowland riverine forest between 40–130 meters, growing on trees close to streams. It's a striking climbing liana reaching up to 5 meters, with oblong-lanceolate leaves 12.5–42 cm long carrying round to rhombic perforations extending up to half the leaf width — a fenestration pattern that has drawn direct comparisons to the South American Monstera genus.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Perforations generally become more dramatic as the plant matures — patience with a young plant pays off with more striking, larger holes over time.
Give it bright light under some shade, a porous, well-draining, slightly acidic mix, and let the soil dry somewhat between waterings — this species dislikes constantly wet substrate. Despite its wet-forest origins, it copes reasonably well with lower humidity, though it grows better and produces more consistent leaves with higher humidity or regular misting.
A genuinely rare species in cultivation, especially prized in its naturally-occurring variegated forms — white, yellow, or orange variegation shows up occasionally in the wild population and is highly sought after by collectors.
