Description
Platycerium Ridleyi Christ.
Platycerium Ridleyi, known as Ridley's Staghorn Fern or "King of Staghorns," is a high-canopy epiphyte native to lowland tropical forest across Peninsular Malaysia, southern Myanmar, southern Thailand, Sumatra, and scattered sites in Borneo (Brunei, Sarawak, East Kalimantan). Its taxonomic history is famously tangled — described nearly simultaneously by several botanists in the early 1900s — but it remains universally known in cultivation under this name.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Airflow matters more than watering frequency for this species — its tightly overlapping shield fronds trap moisture, and stagnant humid air causes rot far more often than underwatering does. A small fan running continuously nearby makes a real difference.
This is one of the smallest Platycerium species, distinguished by tightly ridged, cabbage-like shield fronds and upright, deeply grooved antler-shaped fertile fronds. It's also myrmecophytic — the shield fronds develop channeled veins and small pores believed to help ants move through the root mass, one of only a few ant-associated relationships in the genus. Give it bright indirect light (more than most other staghorns tolerate, but never direct sun), humidity above 80%, and water sparingly — once a week is often enough — always at the root ball rather than on the fronds, letting foliage dry before nightfall.
Considered the plant that separates casual growers from dedicated collectors, this species does not readily produce offsets like many staghorns — propagation is by spore alone, which keeps it slower to multiply and genuinely prized among fern specialists.
