Philodendron Mican
Philodendron Mican (properly micans, botanically a form of Philodendron hederaceum) is native to the Caribbean islands of Dominica and Tobago, growing as an epiphytic and epilithic vine that roots itself onto trees and rocks in humid forest. It's the velvety, soft-textured cousin of the common heart-leaf philodendron, with leaves that emerge bronze to burgundy before deepening to a reddish-brown or purple sheen.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Brighter light shifts leaf color toward reddish bronze, while lower light keeps it darker green — either look is healthy, so let your light levels guide the color you prefer.
Give it bright indirect light, a chunky, well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix, and consistently light moisture rather than a deep dry-down between waterings — its thin stems and delicate roots don't tolerate extremes well. It's genuinely easy-going otherwise, tolerating some neglect and thriving equally well trailing from a hanging basket or trained up a moss pole.
Often confused with the larger, thicker-stemmed Philodendron melanochrysum when young — the tell is leaf shape and vein color, with Mican staying heart-shaped throughout its life and showing greener, less pronounced veins. A genus favorite prized for its soft, velvety texture and easy adaptability.
