Description
Hoya Walliniana
Hoya Walliniana was described by Kloppenburg and Nyhuus in 2003 and is endemic to the lowland rainforests of Borneo, found only in Sabah and Sarawak where it grows as a climbing epiphyte or lithophyte in consistently wet habitats. It was named for Pierre Wallin, a Swedish Hoya collector, and carries glossy, dark green foliage on a twining, trailing vine.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Coming from consistently wet lowland forest, this species wants steady moisture rather than a strict dry-down cycle — but still needs a well-draining mix. It's a fast, forgiving grower once established, more drought-tolerant than its native habitat might suggest.
Bright indirect light brings out the best in the glossy foliage, and like many Hoya, the leaves will sun-stress to an attractive red blush under stronger light. Flowers are small and white with a yellow center — modest compared to some of the showier Hoya, but produced reliably once the plant is well established. Water when the top of the mix has dried to the touch, and provide a well-draining, chunky substrate to mimic the lithophytic and epiphytic conditions it grows in naturally.
As a true Sabah/Sarawak Bornean endemic described only in the last two decades, Hoya Walliniana represents the kind of narrowly-distributed, recently-documented Hoya that collectors specifically seek out. Unlike some of its more finicky relatives, it has a reputation as an easygoing, fast-growing species — a good entry point into Bornean collector Hoya for growers who want rarity without excessive fuss.
