Description
Hoya Sulawesiana
Hoya Sulawesiana was described by S. Rahayu and Rodda in 2020 and is endemic to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, known from only two localities — Mamuju in West Sulawesi and Towuti in South Sulawesi. It carries long, lanceolate to elliptic leaves reaching up to 30 cm, flat to slightly keeled, with a pointed base and an acute to tapering tip.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Known from only two wild localities, this is a genuinely rare Hoya — treat it as a slow, deliberate grower and avoid drastic swings in humidity or light while it establishes.
Its flowers are globose and densely hairy, with corolla lobes covered in long hairs that curve back toward the corona — a feature shared with the closely related Hoya isabelchanae, from which it's distinguished chiefly by its larger, more elongated leaves. Give it bright indirect light, a well-draining epiphyte mix, and consistent humidity typical of its Sulawesi forest habitat.
Sulawesi remains one of the least botanically explored islands in Indonesia despite sitting within the Wallacea biodiversity hotspot, and species like this one — described only in the past few years, and known from just two known populations — represent genuinely significant recent additions to the documented Hoya of the region.
