Description
Hoya Spartiodes
Hoya Spartiodes is a Bornean epiphytic subshrub with a genuinely unusual botanical backstory: it was once classified as the sole member of its own genus, Absolmsia, before molecular studies confirmed it belongs within Hoya after all — placed as a close relative of the miniature-leaved Hoya curtisii, in the same broader group as H. lacunosa, H. imbricata, and H. caudata.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Give this epiphytic subshrub a well-draining, chunky mix and bright indirect light — it grows naturally in Borneo's wet tropical forest, so consistent humidity supports it well.
Despite its close genetic relationship to more familiar Hoya, its flower structure is strikingly different from the rest of the genus — the corolla lobes recurve almost a full 180 degrees, and the corona has a distinctive knobbed, ring-like structure unlike anything else documented in Hoya. It's this floral divergence, paired with a much closer molecular relationship to mainstream Hoya than its unusual flowers would suggest, that makes it a subject of ongoing botanical interest.
For collectors, Hoya Spartiodes offers something genuinely different from typical Hoya foliage and flower form — a species whose taxonomic journey, from its own genus back into Hoya, reflects just how much modern genetic work continues to reshape our understanding of this diverse group.
