Description
Hoya Sipitangensis
Hoya Sipitangensis was described by Kloppenburg and Wiberg in 2002 and named for Sipitang, Sabah, where it was first collected. It's widespread across northern and northwestern Borneo — Brunei and Sabah especially — growing as a climbing epiphyte or lithophyte in coastal and lowland hill forest up to about 300 meters, and has since also been recorded on Palawan in the Philippines.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Leaf color shifts dramatically with light — bright conditions bring out a deep maroon to violet-red tint on otherwise green, silver-splashed foliage.
Give it bright light, a well-draining chunky mix, and allow it to dry between waterings. Flowers are cream-colored with a red corona, produced in generous umbels of 25–30 blooms with a sweet fragrance that lasts about a week. Some Hoya taxonomists consider this species very close to — possibly synonymous with — Hoya walliniana, though the two are currently treated as distinct in the standard Bornean Hoya reference literature, distinguished mainly by flower size.
Its wide natural range across Borneo and now into the Philippines makes it a relatively accessible entry point into named Bornean Hoya for collectors, without sacrificing the striking sun-stress color change that draws people to the genus in the first place.
