Description
Hoya Sigillatis
Hoya Sigillatis is native to Sabah, Borneo, growing as a climbing epiphyte or lithophyte in humid, medium-altitude forest. It's grown chiefly for its foliage: narrow, lance-shaped leaves dusted with fine silvery mottling over a base of olive to deep green, colored by anthocyanin pigments that intensify to brownish-red or burgundy in bright light.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: New leaves often emerge in dusky pink or grey-rose tones before darkening as they mature — this shifting color is part of the display, not a sign of trouble.
Give it bright indirect light, a loose, airy mix of bark and perlite, and let it dry out between waterings — it prefers cooler growing conditions than many tropical Hoya and dislikes staying wet. Trailing stems suit a hanging basket where the silver-flecked foliage can catch the light. Small, fragrant caramel-orange flowers occasionally appear on mature vines, though this species is prized for foliage first.
As a Bornean endemic with several recognized forms in cultivation (narrow, wide, and variegated among them), Hoya Sigillatis is a good example of how much variation exists within a single named Hoya species — foliage collectors especially seek it out for the silver-on-green patterning alone.
