Description

Hoya Multiflora

Hoya Multiflora, commonly called the Shooting Star Hoya, was described by Blume in 1823 and ranges across a wide swath of Asia — from southern China through Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Unlike most Hoya, it grows as an upright, shrubby epiphyte rather than a climbing vine, typically reaching under a meter indoors with oblong-lanceolate leaves up to 18 cm long.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: This is one of the most reliably free-flowering Hoya available — mature plants can push several flushes of blooms a year. Avoid letting the soil go bone-dry while it's in bud, as this commonly causes flower buds to drop before opening.

Its name comes directly from its floral habit — "many-flowered" — with hemispherical clusters of up to 40 fragrant blooms per stalk. Each flower has strongly reflexed, arrow-like white-to-yellow petals with orange tips, giving the whole cluster a distinctive "shooting star" look. Give it bright filtered light or a little direct morning sun, a well-draining bark-and-perlite mix, and consistent (not soggy) moisture, especially while flowering.

For growers who want a Hoya that flowers readily and often rather than waiting years for a single bloom, this remains one of the most rewarding and widely recommended species in the genus.
