Description
Hoya Lambii
Hoya Lambii was named by Ted Green in 2000 in honor of Datuk Anthony Lamb, and is endemic to Sabah, Borneo, growing as a liana in nutrient-poor forest. Sometimes called the "Funnel Hoya," its large, rigid leaves cluster tightly together to form a basin-like structure — a growth habit that captures leaf litter and debris, feeding a symbiotic relationship with resident ants.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species does not like wet feet — err on the side of underwatering rather than over, especially given its naturally nutrient-poor native soil.
The leaves are notably tactile: a soft matte texture on top and a velvety, pubescent underside, similar in shape and thickness to Hoya latifolia but a shade lighter green. Flowers form in a large yellow ball, mottled purple before opening, with a famously strong fragrance often compared to clove oil — one collectors either love or find overpowering. Give it bright indirect light, a lean, well-draining mix, and room for its funnel-forming leaf clusters to develop naturally.
A genuinely sought-after Sabah endemic, valued as much for its unusual funnel-forming growth habit and ant symbiosis as for its striking, intensely fragrant flowers.
