Description
Hoya Glabra
Hoya Glabra was collected by Rudolf Schlechter in Borneo in 1901 and described in 1908, and has more recently also been recorded from Sumatra. In the wild it grows in humid mangrove forest, producing large, dark green leaves — up to 15 x 9 cm — with a somewhat crinkled surface and three prominent veins visible from above, reddish underneath.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This is a large-leaved, large-growing Hoya — give it plenty of room and strong, direct-ish morning light to properly support its size and encourage flowering.
Given good humidity, it produces pink to mauve umbels of up to 30 small, glossy, cream-centered flowers with a pale purple corona, each bloom lasting only a day but replaced steadily as the plant matures. Give it a well-draining mix — its semi-succulent leaves store water but dislike sitting wet — and a sturdy trellis, since this is a genuinely large-growing, twining species that needs room to spread.
For collectors with the space to accommodate a big, vigorous Hoya, this species rewards with substantial, textured foliage and reliable, frequent flowering once established.
