Description
Cyrtosperma Merkusii
Cyrtosperma Merkusii, known as giant swamp taro, is believed to be native to Indonesia, though no confirmed wild populations remain today — it survives only in cultivation, grown throughout Oceania and South and Southeast Asia. It's a genuine giant: mature plants reach 3–4 meters tall, with sagittate (arrowhead-shaped) leaves up to 2 meters long carried on petioles that can stretch nearly 6 meters, arising from a massive starchy corm that can weigh over 100kg.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This is genuinely a swamp plant — keep the substrate constantly wet to boggy, unlike most aroids that prefer to dry out somewhat between waterings.
Give it bright, filtered light, a rich, swampy substrate kept constantly moist to wet, and warm, humid, tropical conditions. This species tolerates mildly brackish water better than almost any other edible aroid, a trait that has made it a critical emergency food crop on low-lying Pacific atolls for generations — cultivated in specially dug swamp pits, it can take up to 15 years to fully mature.
Behind its impressive scale sits genuine cultural weight: giant swamp taro remains a food security crop of deep traditional significance across the Pacific, known by dozens of local names from Kiribati to Tuvalu to the Marshall Islands.
