Description

Caladium Anggur Merah

Caladium Anggur Merah is a named cultivar of Caladium, a genus native to the tropical forests of Brazil and the wider Amazon basin, though nearly all ornamental cultivars today — including the elaborately patterned "Thai hybrid" lines this variety belongs to — trace back to over a century of selective breeding, much of it originating with the Thai royal household. Its trade name translates from Indonesian as "red grape," a nod to its rich red coloring. Like all Caladium, it grows from an underground tuber and produces a fresh flush of large, colorful, arrowhead-shaped leaves each growing season.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Caladium are genuinely dormant growers — expect the foliage to die back for a rest period each year. This is completely normal; keep the tuber on the dry side and let it regrow when it's ready rather than assuming the plant has died.

Give it bright, indirect light (direct sun will scorch the delicate leaves), a loose, well-draining, humus-rich mix, and keep the soil evenly moist through the active growing season. Caladium are heavy feeders during growth, so regular fertilizing supports the strongest color and leaf size — use a low-nitrogen formula, since excess nitrogen can dull leaf coloration.

With well over a thousand named Caladium cultivars now in circulation, collectors prize named varieties like this one specifically for their individual color pattern — no two cultivars look quite alike, and each represents its own small piece of over a century of ornamental breeding history.
