Begonia Tenuissima was described in 2015 and is known only from a small population in the Belaga District of Sarawak, Borneo, growing on deeply shaded, moss-covered rocks and slopes at 541–589 meters elevation. Its species name — literally "the narrowest" — refers to its distinctive, almost needle-like leaves: dark green, slightly thickened, only 8–12mm wide with serrated edges, emerging red to orange in bright light.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species needs 80–90%+ humidity and will melt or shrivel quickly in dry air — plan on a sealed terrarium rather than an open room from the start.
Despite its delicate appearance, mature stems become woody and surprisingly sturdy, growing to about 30–40cm and branching profusely. Give it bright indirect light (never direct sun), a fine, airy, only slightly acidic substrate, and keep it consistently moist without letting the leaves stay wet, which invites fungal issues. It's grown for its fine, lacy foliage texture rather than its inconspicuous flowers.
Known from a genuinely tiny wild population, this is an authentic rarity — a good match for experienced terrarium keepers who appreciate fine, wiry, needle-leaved texture over the broader, showier foliage typical of the genus.
