Begonia Maculata, commonly called the Polka Dot or Angel Wing Begonia, is native to the Atlantic rainforests of Brazil, where it grows beneath the forest canopy in dappled shade. It belongs to the cane-type Begonia group, with bamboo-like jointed stems and elongated, wing-shaped leaves in deep olive green, marked with bright silvery-white spots and a rich burgundy underside.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Humidity is the single factor most likely to make or break this plant — aim for 45% or higher, since low humidity is the most common reason for lackluster growth or leaf drop.
Give it bright, indirect light — the silvery spots actually help the plant capture light efficiently in its native dappled shade — and a light, airy potting mix with added perlite or orchid bark for drainage. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, never letting it sit in standing water, and expect small white flowers with a yellow center to appear in the growing season on well-established plants.
