Begonia Daun Hitam (scientifically Begonia daunhitam — "daun hitam" being Indonesian for "black leaf") was described from West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, named directly for its strikingly dark, nearly black foliage. Leaves are strongly bullate (raised and quilted in texture), a deep olive so dark it reads as black, with pink to red flowers providing a vivid contrast.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Very dark foliage like this can be more prone to scorching in bright light than typical green-leaved Begonia — keep light bright but genuinely indirect.
This species is closely related to Begonia darthvaderiana, another dark-leaved, pink-flowered West Kalimantan Begonia, distinguished from it mainly by inflorescence structure and leaf bullae detail. Give it a well-draining, humus-rich mix, consistent warmth, and steady humidity in the terrarium range, avoiding cold drafts and sudden temperature swings.
Genuinely striking near-black foliage is rare within Begonia, and this species — described only recently from West Kalimantan — represents some of the most dramatic dark-leaved plant material currently coming out of Indonesian Borneo.
