Description
Anthurium Papillilaminum Hybrid
Anthurium Papillilaminum is native to Panama, endemic to a narrow coastal range in Colón and Darién provinces below 100 meters elevation, where it grows terrestrially with very dark, almost black, velvety heart-shaped leaves on short stems. Unlike Anthurium crystallinum, it lacks silver veining, relying instead on its intense, near-black leaf color for visual impact. This hybrid crosses papillilaminum with another velvet-leaf relative — common pairings include crystallinum, regale, or besseae — combining papillilaminum's dark coloring with traits from its cross partner.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Leaf color deepens toward near-black with more light — bright, indirect exposure brings out the most dramatic coloring without risking leaf scorch.
Give it bright, indirect light, high humidity, and a light, well-draining aroid mix. As with pure papillilaminum, allow the top of the mix to dry slightly between waterings, and watch for thrips and spider mites on the velvety foliage, which they favor over glossier leaf types.
Once a genuine rarity, papillilaminum and its hybrids have become some of the most recognized and widely cultivated velvet-leaf Anthurium in the collector market — a strong entry point into the darker, moodier end of the genus.
