Anthurium Crystallinum hybrids like this one draw on a species first described in 1873 by Jean Jules Linden and Édouard André from specimens collected in Colombia, and is native to rainforest margins from Panama through Colombia to Peru, growing as an epiphyte or occasionally terrestrially on shaded forest floors. Its species name refers to the crystalline shimmer of its prominent white veins against dark, velvety, heart-shaped leaves — new growth unfurls in coppery bronze before maturing to deep green.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Velvety leaves like this species' attract thrips and spider mites more readily than glossier aroids — check foliage regularly, especially the undersides.
Give it bright, indirect, dappled light (direct sun will burn both leaves and any flowers), high humidity, and a light, airy, well-draining mix of orchid bark, perlite, and a little peat or sphagnum moss. Water thoroughly, then let the top of the mix approach dryness before watering again — its epiphytic roots want oxygen as much as moisture. A prized Victorian-era conservatory plant that has recently seen a real resurgence in the houseplant world, most crystallinum in cultivation today are tissue-culture lines or hybrids rather than wild-collected stock.
This particular hybrid line crosses crystallinum with one or more related velvet-leaf species — commonly magnificum or forgetii in crystallinum-based breeding programs — to combine the parent species' vein contrast and leaf texture. As with any hybrid, individual plants can vary in exact leaf shape and pattern.
