Rotala Macrandra Mini Butterfly

Rotala Macrandra Mini Butterfly is an intensely red and remarkably compact macrandra cultivar that represents one of the most sensitive and visually rewarding plants in the entire Rotala genus. The combination of compact size, intense red coloration, and extreme sensitivity to low light and poor water flow creates a plant that delivers extraordinary visual impact when conditions are perfect and declines rapidly when they are not — the ultimate expression of the high-tech planted aquarium challenge.

Care tip: Rotala Macrandra Mini Butterfly grows best in high lighting with CO₂ recommended. Maintain temperatures of 72–82°F and pH 5.5–6.8. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy growth and best coloration.

Growing to 8 to 12 inches, Mini Butterfly is compact enough for midground to background use where its intense, compact red display creates a concentrated field of brilliant color. Like all macrandra forms it requires very high light, CO₂, and soft water to develop its intense red and compact leaf form. Regular trimming maintains density and ensures the most vivid new growth is always displayed.

As an advanced plant, Mini Butterfly requires CO₂ injection, intense lighting, soft water, and a pH of 5.5 to 6.8. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F provide comfortable conditions. The sensitivity to low light and poor flow noted in the chart is accurate and significant — this plant requires good water circulation alongside high light and CO₂ for the best results. Any shortfall in these parameters produces rapid and visible decline.

In the aquascape, Rotala Macrandra Mini Butterfly creates a dense, compact, intensely red midground to background display of extraordinary color concentration. Its compact size allows it to be placed in more visible, close-to-viewer positions than tall background Rotala while still delivering macrandra-intensity red color. It is one of the most visually rewarding and technically demanding compact red plants in the planted aquarium hobby.

Rotala Macrandra Mini Butterfly is the most demanding and most intensely red compact Rotala available — a plant for expert-level high-tech aquarists who want macrandra-intensity color in a compact, midground-compatible form.
