Nerve Plant
Nerve Plant
Nerve Plant, botanically Fittonia albivenis, is one of the most visually intricate terrarium foliage plants available — a South American plant producing small, oval leaves covered in a dense network of contrasting veins in combinations of white, red, or pink against green bases. The elaborate vein patterning is immediately striking and creates a visual detail at close range that is unmatched among commonly kept terrarium plants.
Care note: Nerve Plant is best grown in emersed or terrarium conditions with consistent humidity rather than fully submerged. Maintain temperatures of 65–80°F and a humid environment for healthy, vibrant growth.
Not an aquatic plant — Nerve Plant requires consistently high humidity and moderate indirect light in terrarium and paludarium environments. It is one of the most popular and widely used terrarium foliage plants precisely because its demanding humidity requirements are naturally met inside closed or semi-closed terrarium environments. Without adequate humidity the leaves quickly wilt and the plant declines.
This easy plant grows in low to moderate lighting without CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 65 and 80°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. Consistent high humidity is the non-negotiable requirement for successful Nerve Plant cultivation. In a well-maintained terrarium it is one of the most reliable and consistently beautiful foliage plants available.
In the terrarium and paludarium, Nerve Plant creates a ground-level display of intricate veined foliage that provides extraordinary visual detail at close observation. The different color forms — white-veined, red-veined, pink-veined — can be combined to create a richly varied, colorful terrarium floor planting. It pairs naturally with mosses and other fine-textured terrarium plants.
Nerve Plant is a beloved and visually spectacular terrarium foliage plant whose intricate vein patterning and demanding humidity requirements make it ideally suited to the consistently humid environment of a well-maintained planted terrarium.
