Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides

Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides is a delicate and unusual aquatic Hydrocotyle producing tiny, perfectly round leaves that creep across the substrate and hardscape to form a fine-textured, low-growing mat of exceptional botanical charm. The miniature round leaves and creeping growth habit make it a genuinely alternative foreground option to traditional carpet plants — creating a soft, naturalistic coverage of tiny pennywort-like leaves that is both unusual and visually appealing.

Care tip: Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides grows best in moderate lighting with CO₂ recommended. Maintain temperatures of 68–78°F and pH 6.0–7.5. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy growth.

Like other Hydrocotyle species, sibthorpioides grows by sending out creeping stems that spread horizontally across the substrate surface, rooting at nodes and gradually colonizing the available foreground space. Under high light and CO₂ it grows quickly into a dense, matted carpet of tiny round leaves; under lower-light conditions it grows more slowly but still forms a pleasing, natural creeping coverage. Trimming the longer stems encourages denser, more compact growth.

This moderate plant grows best in moderate lighting. CO₂ supplementation is recommended for compact, vigorous carpet growth. Temperatures between 68 and 78°F suggest a preference for slightly cooler conditions — worth noting for aquariums maintained at higher tropical temperatures. A pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provides comfortable conditions. Regular fertilization supports the continuous new leaf production needed for a dense, attractive carpet.

In the aquascape, Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides creates a fine-textured, naturally soft foreground carpet of tiny round leaves that contrasts beautifully with taller, broader-leaved midground and background plants. The miniature round leaves create a delicate carpet scale different from Glossostigma or Hemianthus, and the creeping growth is more naturalistic and less demanding in its requirement for precise management. It suits nature-style layouts and biotope setups where organic, natural foreground coverage is valued.

Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides is a distinctive and rewarding foreground carpet plant for aquarists who appreciate fine botanical texture and unusual leaf form. Its tiny round leaves and creeping growth create a genuinely beautiful and naturalistic foreground alternative.
