Bucephalandra Deep Blue
Bucephalandra Deep Blue
Bucephalandra Deep Blue is a visually spectacular variety whose most remarkable feature is its gorgeous turquoise-blue leaf coloration — a color rarely seen in freshwater aquarium plants. Younger foliage emerges with reddish tones before maturing into the distinctive blue-green that gives this plant its name, while a bright green shine adds luminosity that makes the plant appear almost backlit under good aquarium lighting.
Planting tip: Bucephalandra Deep Blue can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Native to Indonesia, Deep Blue can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to hardscape at any height in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. This variety particularly benefits from moderate to strong water flow, which reflects its natural fast-flowing stream environment and helps maintain the health and color vibrancy of the turquoise leaves. Like all Bucephalandra, it can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.
Deep Blue grows to 3 to 5 inches and thrives in low to moderate lighting. CO₂ supplementation is not required but will encourage the most vivid expression of the turquoise coloration. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 suit this plant well.
In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Deep Blue is most effective as a featured specimen on prominent hardscape where its turquoise coloring can be fully appreciated. The blue-green tones are virtually unique among aquarium plants and create an extraordinary contrast with red or orange plants, dark substrate, and natural stone.
Bucephalandra Deep Blue is a collector's showpiece and a conversation starter in any aquarium. Its rare turquoise coloration, the warm red of new growth, and classic Bucephalandra hardiness combine to make it one of the most desirable plants in the hobby.
