Bolbitis Broadleaf
Bolbitis Broadleaf
Bolbitis Broadleaf is a larger-frond variant of the aquatic Bolbitis fern from Africa, producing broader, more substantial pinnate leaves than the standard narrow-leaved Bolbitis species. The larger frond size creates a bolder, more commanding midground to background presence — a plant whose visual weight suits larger aquariums and prominent hardscape positions where the impressive pinnate leaves can develop to their full extent.
Planting tip: Bolbitis Broadleaf should be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape with the rhizome or roots fully exposed — never buried in substrate. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Like all Bolbitis ferns, Broadleaf must be attached to wood or rock with the rhizome kept fully exposed and never buried. Good water flow is important for this African aquatic fern, supporting healthy frond development and preventing sediment accumulation on the broad pinnate leaf surfaces. Once attached to suitable hardscape in good flow, Bolbitis Broadleaf develops into an increasingly impressive specimen over months and years.
Bolbitis Broadleaf is a moderate plant that grows under medium lighting. CO₂ supplementation is optional. Temperatures between 68 and 80°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. Growth is slow — typical of the Bolbitis genus — but the long-lived, broad pinnate fronds remain structurally impressive for years once the plant is well established. Regular liquid fertilization and excellent water quality produce the best results.
In the aquascape, Bolbitis Broadleaf creates bold, textured midground to background structure on driftwood and rock whose larger fronds provide substantial visual mass and shade. The broad pinnate leaves create impressive shadow patterns and natural complexity that suits nature-style and biotope compositions where authentic, botanical hardscape planting is a design priority. In large aquariums a mature Bolbitis Broadleaf on prominent driftwood becomes a defining feature of the entire layout.
Bolbitis Broadleaf is a patient aquarist's plant of considerable long-term reward. Its broad pinnate fronds, African authenticity, and impressive mature size make it one of the most striking hardscape-attached aquarium ferns available.
