Bolbitis
Bolbitis
Bolbitis is a magnificent aquatic fern from West Africa producing dark, deeply pinnate green leaves on creeping rhizomes that create dramatic, forest-floor character wherever they are established on driftwood or stone. The deeply divided pinnate fronds are dark green with a slight iridescent quality that catches light beautifully in the aquarium current, creating one of the most naturally impressive hardscape-attached plants available for the freshwater aquarium.
Planting tip: Bolbitis should be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape with the rhizome or roots fully exposed — never buried in substrate. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Like all Bolbitis ferns, this species must be attached to rock or wood — the rhizome must never be buried in substrate. Once attached and given good water flow and stable conditions, Bolbitis develops into an increasingly impressive specimen over months and years. Good water circulation is essential for this species, reflecting its natural habitat in the fast-moving rivers and streams of West Africa. Strong flow keeps the fronds healthy and prevents sediment from settling on the pinnate leaf surfaces.
Bolbitis is a moderate plant that grows under low lighting without requiring CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 68 and 80°F provide comfortable conditions. A pH of 6.0 to 7.5 suits this plant well. Growth is very slow — Bolbitis is one of the slowest-growing aquarium plants — but the long-lived, dark pinnate fronds remain beautiful and structurally impressive for years once established. Liquid fertilization and excellent water quality support the best results.
In the aquascape, Bolbitis creates dramatic, dark-leaved midground to background structure on driftwood that is unlike any other commonly available aquarium plant. The deeply pinnate fronds create rich, complex texture and natural shadow patterns beneath them. A mature Bolbitis specimen on a large piece of natural driftwood is one of the most impressive sights in the planted aquarium hobby. Good water flow makes the fronds sway naturally, adding life and movement to the composition.
Bolbitis is a magnificent aquatic fern for patient aquarists with adequate water flow and stable tank conditions. Its dark pinnate fronds, West African authenticity, and long-lived beauty make it one of the finest hardscape-attached aquarium plants in the hobby.
