Description
Azolla Caroliniana
Azolla Caroliniana is a tiny North American floating fern producing minuscule, interlocking fronds that multiply rapidly across the water surface in still or low-flow conditions. One of the most biologically interesting floating plants available — a genuine fern that harbors nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in its frond cavities, historically cultivated in Asia as a natural fertilizer for rice paddies. In the aquarium its most striking feature is the dramatic color change from green to vivid red under strong light.
Care tip: Azolla Caroliniana is a floating plant — it grows on the water surface and does not require substrate planting. Maintain temperatures of 60–80°F and avoid strong surface agitation for best growth.
Azolla grows as a dense, spreading surface mat whose individual fronds interlock to create a continuous floating carpet. It multiplies rapidly in still water and must be managed regularly to prevent complete surface coverage that would block light to submerged plants. The color change to red occurs most dramatically under strong light and at slightly higher temperatures — a living indicator of tank conditions.
This easy plant requires no CO₂ supplementation and grows in moderate to high lighting. The temperature range of 60 to 80°F is genuine and reflects cold tolerance appropriate for a North American native. A pH of 6.5 to 7.5 provides comfortable conditions. Regular thinning maintains appropriate surface coverage and prevents the dense mat from blocking too much light.
In the aquascape, Azolla Caroliniana provides fast, natural surface coverage with the added visual interest of its green-to-red color response under strong light. In shrimp tanks the dense floating mat creates ideal surface refuge and the falling fronds provide natural foraging material. The nitrogen-fixing bacterial symbiosis makes it a biologically enriching addition to any aquarium ecosystem.
Azolla Caroliniana is a biologically fascinating and practically useful floating fern for aquarists who appreciate the unusual end of the floating plant spectrum. Its rapid growth, dramatic color response, and nitrogen-fixing biology make it one of the most naturally interesting floating plants available for freshwater aquariums.
