Description
Schismatoglottis Calyptrata Sumatra
Schismatoglottis Calyptrata is the type species of the entire Schismatoglottis genus — the reference point against which every other Schismatoglottis is classified — originally described by Roxburgh and placed in this genus by Zollinger and Moritzi in 1846. This Sumatran form shows the genus at its most classic: compact, clumping growth with glossy green foliage low to the forest floor.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Watch the leaves for a cue — they droop noticeably when the plant is thirsty and perk back up quickly once watered, making this species easy to read.
Give it low to medium indirect light, an airy, well-draining aroid mix, and water once the top layer of soil has dried. Unlike its aromatic look-alike Homalomena, Schismatoglottis leaves have no scent when cut — a simple way to tell the two genera apart. The genus name itself, from Greek for "split tongue," describes the distinctive way its spathe splits during flowering.
As the species that defines the entire genus, this is a foundational plant for any Schismatoglottis collection — a genuine reference point for a group whose taxonomy continues to be actively revised.
