Piper Porphyrophyllum

Piper Porphyrophyllum, commonly called Tiger's Betel, was described by N.E. Brown and is native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Its name — Greek for "purple leaf" — refers to the deep purple-red leaf undersides, contrasting with dark, velvety green foliage on top, patterned with intricate pink and white markings reminiscent of tiger stripes.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: This species is naturally slow-growing and compact, making it a strong choice for terrarium culture where its high-humidity needs are easiest to maintain.

Give it bright, filtered light, high humidity, and a well-draining mix that's allowed to dry slightly between waterings. It can be grown as a trailing terrarium plant or given support to climb, and its striking pink-and-white variegation remains vibrant as the plant matures, unlike some variegated aroids that fade with age.

One of the more visually dramatic Piper species in cultivation, prized specifically for its velvety texture and enduring variegation — a genuine terrarium showpiece.
