Description
Myrmecodia Tuberosa
Myrmecodia Tuberosa was described by Jack in 1823 and is native across Southern Asia, including northwest Borneo, East Malaysia, New Guinea, and northern Australia, growing epiphytically on savannah trees. It's a true myrmecophyte, or "ant plant" — its swollen, semi-succulent stem (the caudex) is riddled with hollow internal chambers and tunnels that house colonies of stinging ants, a genuine mutualistic partnership in which the ants get shelter and the plant receives nutrients from their waste.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species is genuinely quick to shed leaves if it dries out or gets cold — keep it consistently warm and never let the substrate go bone dry, even briefly.
Give it bright light with some protection from harsh midday sun, high humidity, and warm temperatures year-round. An open, orchid-style substrate — sphagnum moss, chopped fir bark, and perlite — works well, or the plant can be mounted on cork bark for a more natural look given consistently high humidity. Roots are brittle, so handle repotting carefully; new roots can form from almost any part of the tuber touching moist substrate.
Beyond its remarkable ant-housing biology, this species carries real ethnobotanical weight — used in traditional Papuan medicine for generations and studied more recently for its immune-modulating properties. No ants are required for successful cultivation; the plant grows perfectly well without tenants.
