Leea Zipeliana Miq.

Leea Zipeliana was described by Miquel in 1863 and is native to New Guinea, a slender shrub or small tree reaching up to 7 meters, with single-leaflet foliage and small clusters of greenish-yellow flowers followed by reddish-orange berries. It belongs to Leea, a genus in the grape family (Vitaceae) that, unusually for that family, grows as non-climbing shrubs and small trees rather than climbing vines with tendrils.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: This species prefers consistent warmth — keep temperatures above 60°F (15°C) at minimum, since it has little cold tolerance.

Give it bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, regular watering, and high humidity. Left to grow, it can eventually reach small-tree size, though it stays considerably more compact and manageable in a container.

A distinctive member of the grape family that doesn't look or grow anything like a grapevine — a genuinely uncommon New Guinea species for collectors interested in the lesser-known corners of Vitaceae.
