Description
Kadsura Borneensis (ex. Pilea Kalbar)
Kadsura Borneensis was described by A.C. Smith and is native to Borneo, growing as a twining, woody vine with thick, leathery leaves in lowland rainforest. It was previously circulated in the trade as "Pilea Kalbar" before more accurate identification placed it correctly in Kadsura, a genus of roughly 17 climbing vine species in the Schisandraceae family — the same family as the well-known "five-flavor fruit," Schisandra chinensis.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Give it something to climb — as a twining vine, this species will look for a support to wrap around and grows best when given one.
Give it bright, filtered light, a rich, well-draining mix, and consistent moisture and humidity reflecting its lowland rainforest habitat. Like other Kadsura, it's dioecious (separate male and female plants), with small, fragrant, often inconspicuous flowers followed by brightly colored clustered fruit given the right growing conditions.
A good example of how visually similar understory vines can circulate under an entirely different genus's trade name before more careful identification sorts them out — a genuinely uncommon Bornean vine for collectors interested in the lesser-known corners of the Schisandraceae family.
