Description

Hoya Wallichii

Hoya Wallichii is native to Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, and Singapore (where it was once thought extinct before being rediscovered), growing as a scrambling subshrub or lithophyte in wet tropical forest. It carries thinly leathery leaves and produces a broadly bell-shaped (campanulate) corolla, typically opening one flower at a time rather than in a large cluster.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: As a lithophyte/scrambling subshrub in the wild, this species appreciates a chunky, well-draining mix and doesn't need to be trained as a strict vine — allow it room to scramble or provide light support.

Give it bright indirect light, a well-draining epiphyte-style mix, and allow the substrate to dry between waterings in typical Hoya fashion. Like its close relatives Hoya wongii and Hoya mappigera — both similarly thin-leaved Bornean species — Hoya Wallichii sits within a small group of closely related Hoya distinguished mainly by subtle differences in flower shape.

This is a genuinely regional collector's plant, with a natural range spanning Borneo through Peninsular Malaysia and historically Singapore — a good pick for collectors interested in the finer taxonomic distinctions among Southeast Asian Hoya.
