Description
Hoya Undulata
Hoya Undulata was described by S. Rahayu and Rodda in 2015 from West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, where it grows as an epiphytic or lithophytic climber in lowland heath forest. Its name refers to the distinctive wavy (undulate) margins of its leathery, semi-glossy leaves, which typically run 7–15 cm long with fine surface veining.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This is a slow grower by nature — don't expect rapid coverage. Bright, humid conditions bring out the best leaf texture and wave in the margins.
What makes Hoya Undulata a genuine botanical rarity is its myrmecophytic biology: the leaf bases can form domatia, small pocket-like structures that shelter ant colonies in the wild — a trait shared with only a handful of other Hoya, including H. mitrata and H. darwinii. Its corona is similarly unusual among Bornean Hoya, with lobes that develop two lateral hooked appendages. Give it a well-draining epiphyte mix, bright indirect light, and consistent humidity to mimic its heath-forest origins.
Bornean Hoya diversity is thought to rival or exceed that of the Philippines and New Guinea, and species like this one — described only within the last decade — represent the ongoing wave of discovery coming out of West Kalimantan's heath forests, an increasingly threatened habitat.
