Description
Hoya Mappigera
Hoya Mappigera was described by Rodda and Simonsson in 2012, native to swamp and lowland forest across southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and Borneo (Sabah, Brunei), growing as a climbing shrub. Its name comes from the Latin "mappa" (cloth) and "-ger" (carrying), describing the broadly bell-shaped (campanulate) corolla that gives the flower its distinctive, draped look.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Bright, indirect light encourages the best flowering on this species — don't keep it too shaded if blooms are the goal.
Despite its oldest herbarium record being over a century old, this species went undescribed for decades because it was repeatedly confused with the co-occurring Hoya campanulata and the Singapore endemic Hoya wallichii, both of which share the same showy, broadly bell-shaped flower form. Give it bright indirect light, a well-draining mix, and consistent humidity reflecting its swamp and lowland forest origins.
A good example of how easily superficially similar Hoya flowers can mask a genuinely distinct species — this one hid in plain sight in herbaria for over 100 years before finally being recognized and named.
