Description
Hoya Coronaria
Hoya Coronaria was described by Blume and ranges from southern Thailand through western and central Malesia, including the heath forests of Bangka-Belitung, Indonesia, where it grows as an epiphyte in nutrient-poor, sandy, acidic soil. The species name — Latin for "crown" — refers to the shape of its flower. Leaves are thick, elliptic, and velvety, up to 14 cm long.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Flower color in this species is genuinely variable from plant to plant — whitish, reddish, brownish, or yellowish blooms are all normal for the species, not a sign of mislabeling.
Its large, waxy, star-shaped flowers can reach around 3 cm across and are thought to be pollinated by moths, releasing a strong fragrance at night to attract them. Note that the latex and the soft hairs covering the stems and leaves can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals, so handle with care. Give it bright light, a well-draining mix, and a support to climb, as mature plants can reach several meters.
Populations from heath-forest habitats like Belitung Island show unusually high natural variation in flower color compared to the same species elsewhere in its range, making individual plants of Hoya Coronaria something of a lottery in the best sense — collectors often can't predict exactly what shade a given plant will bloom until it flowers.
