Description
Homalomena Rubescens
Homalomena Rubescens, commonly called Queen of Hearts, is native to northern India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, growing as an upright rainforest-floor perennial. It rises from long, thin, reddish-brown rhizomes, with red stems and petioles supporting fleshy, glossy leaves — triangular when young, becoming classically heart-shaped (cordate) at maturity, up to 35cm long on well-established plants.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Watch the plant, not the calendar — stems and leaves visibly droop when thirsty, giving a clear, reliable signal that it's time to water.
Give it bright, indirect light (this species also tolerates lower light well, making it forgiving for less bright rooms), a rich but well-draining aroid mix, and water once the surface has dried. Cutting a leaf releases a distinct anise scent — a fun identifying trait, though the sap does contain calcium oxalate crystals and can irritate skin, so handle with care and keep it away from pets and children.
A genuinely easy-care, low-light-tolerant aroid with real presence — the classic species behind the many Homalomena cultivars (Maggy, Stardust, Emerald Gem) that have become popular in their own right.
