Dioscorea Spiculiflora was described by Hemsley and belongs to Dioscorea, the true yam genus, a group of roughly 613 tuberous climbing plant species found throughout the tropics and subtropics. Like its relatives, it's a climbing or twining vine (technically termed "lianescent" or "scandent" in botanical terms), producing dry, capsule-type fruit.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Give it something to climb — as a twining vine, this species will look for a support and grows best when given one.
Give it bright, filtered light, rich, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral loamy soil (pH 5.5–7.0), and consistent moisture with excellent drainage. Dioscorea species typically grow from an underground tuber and can show seasonal dieback, regrowing from the tuber when conditions favor active growth.
The true yam genus carries enormous global significance — a staple food crop across the tropics for millennia, with documented traditional medicinal use dating back to at least 2000 BC — genuine botanical substance behind an unassuming climbing vine.
