Description

Cissus Discolor

Cissus Discolor, commonly called the Rex Begonia Vine or Tapestry Vine, is native to tropical Asia — south-central China, Nepal, India, mainland Southeast Asia, Java, and the Philippines — growing at 600–2000 meters elevation as a slender climbing vine. Despite the common name, it's entirely unrelated to true begonias; it belongs to the grape family (Vitaceae) and is closely related to grape ivy (Cissus rhombifolia). Its heart-shaped leaves show a dramatic patchwork of silver, green, and deep purple, with a rich burgundy underside — a resemblance to painted-leaf Begonia foliage that gives the plant its common name.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Small opaque dots (cystoliths) sometimes appear on the leaves and stems — these are a natural mineral secretion, not pests or damage.

Give it bright, indirect light, high humidity (60%+ ideally), and a rich, well-draining mix, watering once the top inch of soil is dry. Give it a trellis or moss pole to climb using its tendrils, or let it trail from a hanging basket for a cascading effect. It's genuinely sensitive to cold — below 50°F (10°C) it will drop its leaves, though it typically resprouts once temperatures warm back up in spring.

One of the most visually dramatic vines available for a hanging basket or trellis — genuinely more demanding than many houseplant vines, but the payoff is some of the most striking multicolored foliage in cultivation.
