Begonia Rachmatii was described by Tebbitt and is known only from Gunung Babalombang in Sulawesi, Indonesia. It belongs to Begonia section Petermannia and is notable for its palmately compound leaf blades — a genuinely unusual leaf structure shared with only two other described species in the section, one from the Philippines and one from Irian Jaya.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species grows as an erect herb without a rhizome, reaching up to 2 meters in habitat — give it vertical room to grow rather than treating it as a low, spreading groundcover type.
Give it bright, indirect light, a well-draining, humus-rich mix, and consistent warmth and humidity. Its erect, branching, red-and-green banded stems and compound leaf structure give it a noticeably different silhouette from the low, rounded rhizomatous Begonia more commonly seen in collections.
Known from a single Sulawesi mountain locality and sharing its unusual compound-leaf trait with only a couple of other described species worldwide, this is a genuinely rare botanical curiosity for collectors interested in the more unusual leaf architectures within Begonia.
