Begonia Ocellata was described by Ardi and is endemic to West Sumatra, Indonesia, belonging to Begonia section Bracteibegonia. Its species name refers to the array of spots on its rounded leaves, likened to the pattern of the ocellate river stingray. It's a fuzzy-leaved, trailing species with at least two known forms — one greenish-purple and spotless, the other blueish-pink with small white polka dots, each dot centered by a single fine hair.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species genuinely needs very high humidity, in the 85–100% range — a sealed terrarium or humidity dome is essentially required, not optional.
Give it bright, indirect light, evenly moist but never soggy soil, and stable warmth without cold drafts. Red stems covered in fine pink hairs branch out at angles from the main plant, forming a small colony over time. This species has been propagated among Begonia collectors in Indonesia and neighboring countries and remains attractive and sought-after in cultivation despite its exacting care requirements.
One of the most visually distinct species in its section thanks to its stingray-like spotted pattern — genuinely challenging to grow well, but a rewarding centerpiece for an experienced terrarium keeper.
