Description

Alocasia Longiloba

Alocasia Longiloba was published by Miquel in 1856 and ranges across an unusually wide span of Southeast Asia — from southern China through mainland Southeast Asia into western and central Malesia, including Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, and Sulawesi. It's the namesake of an entire species complex, since several once-distinct names ('argyrea', 'korthalsii', 'lowii', 'watsoniana') are now generally treated as forms within Longiloba rather than separate species.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Keep the pot tight to the root ball — an oversized pot holding excess damp mix around an undersized root system is one of the most common causes of rot in this species.

This is a variable species — some forms are narrow and spear-like, others broader and shield-shaped — but all share the same elongated, arrow-shaped leaf with extended rear lobes, pale contrasting veins, and a rich green surface often paired with a purple-toned underside. In the wild it grows terrestrially on the forest floor or occasionally as a lithophyte, in swamp forest, ravines, and rocky terrain, so it tolerates a range of moisture conditions once established. Give it 50–70% filtered light, high humidity, and warm, stable temperatures.

As the anchor species of one of the most geographically wide-ranging and visually variable groups in the genus, Alocasia Longiloba offers real botanical depth alongside its architectural good looks — no two regional forms look quite the same.
