Description

Alocasia Cuprea

Alocasia Cuprea was formally described by German botanist Karl Koch in 1861, though it had already reached European horticulture in the 1850s via collector Thomas Lobb. It's endemic to Borneo — Sabah, Sarawak, and Kalimantan — growing in shaded, humid forest on slopes above streams up to roughly 700 meters. Its name, from the Latin for "copper," describes the plant's signature trait: thick, glossy, deeply ribbed leaves with an iridescent metallic sheen shifting from coppery-bronze on young growth to deep bronze-green at maturity, with rich reddish-purple undersides.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Underwatering is far safer than overwatering with this species — its compact size means the roots hold moisture well, and root rot is the single biggest risk to its health.

This is a compact, slow-growing jewel Alocasia — typically staying under two feet even at maturity, and taking 5–8 years to reach full size. The raised primary venation frames each metallic leaf panel like stained glass, an effect thought to help the plant capture diffuse light in its shaded forest understory. Give it bright indirect light (never direct sun), a rich but fast-draining aroid mix, and 60–80% humidity — average household humidity is tolerated but not ideal.

One of the true classics of the jewel Alocasia world — continuously in cultivation since the Victorian era and still considered by many collectors to be the quintessential metallic-leaved Alocasia, and the parent of numerous well-known Alocasia hybrids.
