Description
Aglaonema Rotundum
Aglaonema Rotundum was described by N.E. Brown in 1893 and is found near a waterfall at roughly 360 meters elevation near Medan, North Sumatra. It's prized for rounded, broad, very dark leaves traced with vivid pink to red veins — one of the strongest color contrasts found in any true-species Aglaonema, rather than a hybrid or cultivar.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: This species tolerates average indoor conditions less gracefully than common hybrid Chinese evergreens — give it a stable environment and avoid sudden temperature swings or cold drafts.
Give it bright, filtered light (or dappled shade — it's shade-tolerant but colors best with good indirect light), a loose, well-draining, humus-rich mix, and water abundantly as the top layer of substrate dries in the growing season, tapering off in cooler months. High humidity keeps the leaves from developing dry, deformed tips or edges. It typically stays compact, around 30–50 cm, making it well suited to shelves or smaller collections where its vein pattern can be appreciated up close.
This species has also been used in hybridizing — crossed with Aglaonema commutatum tricolor, it's a parent of the popular "Pride of Sumatera" hybrid — evidence of just how influential its striking, vividly-veined foliage has been within Aglaonema breeding.
