Description

Aglaonema Pictum Bicolor

Aglaonema Pictum was described by Kunth in 1841 and is native to Sumatra and Nias Island, growing on volcanic mountain slopes between 1000–2000 meters in the deeply shaded forest understory. The "Bicolor" form shows a simpler two-tone camouflage pattern — typically dark and medium green patches, without the added silvery-cream highlights of the Tricolor form — but shares the same thick, matte, leathery leaf texture and slow, steady growth habit.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: This is a genuinely slow grower — expect roughly a year for each stem to mature before flowering and branching. Growing an established, well-rooted plant rather than repeatedly taking cuttings leads to a fuller, bushier specimen over time.

Give it medium to bright indirect light (too much light bleaches the camo pattern, too little slows already-slow growth further), a well-draining, humus-rich, airy aroid mix, and water once the top inch or two of soil has dried. Keep it consistently warm — below 65°F (18°C) will stress the plant — and avoid both letting it dry out completely and letting it sit waterlogged, since this species is sensitive to both extremes.

A close relative of the more famous Tricolor form, Bicolor offers the same collector appeal and camouflage-leaf character in a simpler two-tone pattern — a good entry point into Aglaonema pictum for those not ready to commit to the pricier Tricolor.
