Rhino Goby

Rhino Goby (Redigobius balteatus) is a small and charming goby from Southeast Asian coastal streams and estuaries. The common name comes from a distinctive bump or protrusion on the snout of adult males — a subtle but characteristic feature that, combined with bold banding on the body and vivid fin markings, gives this fish a distinctive and appealing appearance.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets make a good staple. Supplement with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp and Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Tubifex Worms 2–3 times per week. Feed near the substrate.

Native to brackish and freshwater coastal streams and estuaries across Southeast Asia — Philippines, Indonesia, Borneo, and surrounding areas. Inhabits shallow, clear to slightly turbid water with rocky or sandy substrate and submerged vegetation. Adaptable to pure freshwater in hard, alkaline conditions.

Keep in pairs or small groups. Males are territorial but manageable. Compatible with other small, peaceful species in hard-water conditions. Provides caves and rocky structure for territory establishment.

A compact and personable goby that is more adaptable than many specialist species. The rhino-like snout bump of adult males is an endearing and characteristic feature that gives this fish its name.
