Giant Danio
Giant Danio (Devario aequipinnatus) is the largest commonly available danio — reaching up to 4 inches and with a bold, active presence to match. The pale blue-silver body is marked with vivid horizontal blue and gold-yellow stripes that shimmer as the fish moves. Belonging to the genus Devario rather than true Danio, it is the classic 'dither fish' for medium to large cichlids and other fish that require fast, confident tankmates.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Vibra Bites to enhance color and condition. Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp are an excellent additional treat. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily. A tight-fitting lid is strongly recommended — danios are enthusiastic jumpers.
Native to fast-flowing rivers and streams of South and Southeast Asia — India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Inhabits clear, well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong current. In the aquarium, good flow and oxygenation are appreciated but not strictly required. More adaptable than many of its smaller relatives.
Keep in groups of at least six — Giant Danios are most impressive and natural in numbers. A large school in a long aquarium is a spectacular sight. Their bold, active nature makes them excellent dither fish for South American cichlids, large tetras, and other fish that benefit from the presence of confident, constantly moving companions. Avoid very small fish — Giant Danios are not aggressive but small fish may be stressed by their constant activity.
Danios are prolific and easy egg-scatterers that spawn with little encouragement in a well-maintained aquarium. Males chase females vigorously before spawning among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate. Eggs and fry receive no parental care — adults will eat eggs if given the chance. For intentional breeding, a separate shallow tank with spawning mops or fine-leaved plants, slightly warmer water, and removal of adults after spawning is straightforward and reliable. Females are noticeably plumper than males. The Giant Danio has long been used as a dither fish in cichlid aquariums — its fast, unpredictable movement pattern signals to nervous cichlids that the environment is safe.
